Univer product film: One formula, typed in a single take.

Univer is an open-source office suite that runs in the browser, built around its spreadsheet. A sheet gets interesting once the numbers start working, so the film skips the setup and lets the data arrive by itself. The moment it is built around is a single formula, typed in one go, that fills in the total.

The idea.

The sheet is the real app, built from Univer's own packages and run locally with fictional profit and loss figures.

Sound

  • Every character of the formula has its own key click, which makes the single take the beat you notice.
  • The chart gets a lift and a tick per bar. The one heavy hit is saved for the name.
  • Music is a licensed house track, kept low under the voiceover.

Formats

16:9 and 9:16 from one project. In the vertical cut the headlines break over more lines and the sheet and chart are re-centred for the narrow frame.

0:00 to 0:03
An empty sheet fills. Six months of revenue and expenses drop in row by row.
0:03 to 0:08
One suite. Profit and margin columns fill in. Chips for Sheets, Docs and Slides rise over the window, with an "Apache-2.0, open source" tag beside them.
0:08 to 0:11
The formula. The camera zooms into the Total row. =SUM(B2:B7) is typed character by character, Enter is pressed and $326,200 lands in the cell with a flash.
0:11 to 0:13
The chart. A "Profit by month" bar chart lifts out of the selected column and its six bars rise one after another.
0:13 to 0:15
Two cursors. Two teammate cursors fly in and settle on different cells, each with a coloured box, and a "self-hosted, your data" tag drops in.
0:15 to 0:21
The end title. "Univer" and the line "Work, unboxed." on white, then the OVERSHOOT credit.
