Webamp product film: Built to feel like 1999.

Webamp is an open-source rebuild of a classic desktop music player from the late nineties, and it runs in a browser with its skins and visualiser intact. People come to it for nostalgia. So the film borrows the look of music software from that time and cuts every scene on the beat of the track.

The idea.

The windows are the real Webamp with its default skin, run in a browser on our machine.

Sound

  • The track drives the edit. Its breakdown sits under the opening question, the drop lands on "Webamp brings it back", and each scene change arrives on a beat.
  • A needle drop opens the film and comes back when the play button is pressed at the end.
  • Music is a licensed house track.

Formats

16:9 and 9:16 from one project. In the vertical cut the visualiser sits above the player instead of beside it, and the headlines centre over the windows.

The film.

The track names in the playlist are made up, and the audio files behind them were synthesised for the capture.

0:00 to 0:04
Remember when. The player floats tilted on a dark grid with its track title scrolling, while "Remember when your music player had personality?" builds word by word.
0:04 to 0:06
Right in your browser. On the drop, a browser window opens with the player, equaliser and playlist stacked.
0:06 to 0:09
Drag in a track, take it apart. A file is dragged into the playlist and lands as the fourth track. Then the main window splits into the bitmaps its skin is made of and snaps back together.
0:09 to 0:11
The visualiser. The visualiser window opens and fills with moving light and colour.
0:11 to 0:14
Rebuilt for the web. The equaliser sits under "Nostalgia, rebuilt for the web." while a terminal line types out the install command.
0:14 to 0:20
The end title. "Webamp" and "Press play like it's ninety-nine." A play button appears and is pressed, then the OVERSHOOT credit.
